Here’s what happened in October!

Bilbo the Sulcata tortoise

A new face is Bilbo the Sulcata tortoise. Bilbo’s family cared for him for 23 years, but then faced a heartbreaking situation — the wife will soon undergo a kidney transplant, and for at least a year afterward, she can’t be around reptiles due to infection risks that could cause her body to reject the new kidney. Even beyond that first year, her immune system will remain fragile, meaning it wouldn’t be safe for her to bring Bilbo home again. Sometimes rescue doesn’t mean “saving from neglect,” it means carrying on someone else’s love when they no longer can.

A temporary new face was Mr. Bumbles, who appeared to have been kicked out of the hive. He had tattered wings, so he wasn’t going to survive, but we gave him fresh fruit and sugar water and kept him warm and safe. He was at AnimO for four days, which is much longer than expected.

We are also building a proper emu enclosure! We had some volunteers come over a weekend and help clear the area where the new space will be, and we made a lot of progress.
